The TRUTH about the Sinner’s Prayer

by David Lemmons

SinnersPrayer

This past Sunday morning was a very unusual one at Maple Hill. The roads were slick and the hill was slick, and the parking lot was covered. It was decided to cancel the morning worship assembly. A BIG THANKS to Anthony for clearing our parking lot and making it possible to get up the hill and assemble for the regular PM service.

Our sermon at that hour was: “The TRUTH about the Sinner’s Prayer.” We sought to answer three questions in the message:

  1. When and how did it develop?
  2. What verses are used to defend it?
  3. Which accounts of conversion in the New Testament make reference to it?

We have uploaded the audio file from that meeting and you can listen to it below…

Addition & Subtraction Problems

A couple of weeks ago, I found an audio recording of a sermon B.J. Clarke preached in McMinnville in 2009. I listened to it at least five times. It was very powerfully presented. I have benefited tremendously from many sermons that B.J. Clarke has preached. I have dozens of his sermons in my digital library–never have found one that was not extremely helpful in understanding the matter he discussed. I used a couple of points from his sermon to preach last Sunday. His sermon was well over 50 minutes, which is fine for him, but I don’t have that same ability to hold the attention of an assembly as he does. The two points were powerful, however, and will be by anyone who studies them and uses them properly! His sermon was: What Did the Church Look Like in the First Century.

I have posted below in the player my shorter version and challenge you to listen carefully and feel the power of two simple illustrations. You can DOWNLOAD the mp3 file by RIGHT-clicking on the arrow to the side of the player (35:43 minutes; 12.5mb).

Changed Stones of Acts 7

by David Lemmons

ChangedStonesActs7

The study of Acts 7 was continued from the radio program (WALKING IN TRUTH) at 7:00 a.m. to the Sunday morning worship assembly at 11:00 yesterday morning. We preached a sermon on: “Changed Stones of Acts 7.” The outline for the sermon was adapted from: The Preacher’s Homiletic Commentary (vol. 32, p. 171). For the first time I tried saving the PowerPoint slides as a PDF file and found that it works quite well and I can now use my iPod as a backup for the presentation (no longer will I have to print out on paper the slides). It is perfectly clear and easy to read the words on my iPod. The PDF file (445kb) is smaller than the original PowerPoint. When you open the PDF, hit Control + L and it will go full-screen. You can read all of the slides by clicking H-E-R-E. The audio recording of the sermon is available for streaming or downloading below.

In this sermon we seek to encourage faithfulness in living the Christian life, even amidst strong opposition and persecution, because the stones that enemies of truth hurl will, sooner or later, be changed in ways that bless our lives!

Incidentally, for any preachers reading this, I only recently (in the last few months) received a digital version of the massive 38-volume commentary, The Preacher’s Homiletic Commentary, in Logos format. I had placed a community pricing bid on the set many months ago and it finally was brought forth. My successful bid was $40. I think it now sells at Logos for about $390.

Walking in Truth–Acts 3

by David Lemmons

WIT-Logo

In Acts 3 we begin to read about how the apostles went about their work of spreading the gospel to the lost.  They were single-minded men.  They went about doing good for the purpose of spreading the news about salvation through Jesus Christ.  In this chapter they heal a lame man by the authority of Jesus Christ.  Having drawn a crowd as a result of this great miracle, Peter began to preach about Christ.  He continues to draw to the attention of the Jews that when they asked for Jesus to be crucified they were fighting against God.  They explained to the people how they might be forgiven of their sins.  They referred the Jews to their own Scriptures as proof that they ought to hear Christ.

Just below is the audio file for the radio program, WALKING IN TRUTH for Sunday, 14 July 2013. You can listen to the ~30-minute lesson streaming from the player below, or download the mp3 file (10.4 mb) by RIGHT-clicking on the arrow to the side of the player.
