Studying the Book of Revelation

I am excited to begin a study of the last book of the Bible, the Book of Revelation. The very first verse of the book lets us know that it will be filled with symbolic language as it uses the word: SIGNIFIED. As we begin this study, let me assure you that I am not arrogant enough to think that everyone will share my ideas about what is the best way to approach the study of this great New Testament Book. I am quite confident that will NOT be the case. There are differences of opinion over dating the book which also affect the approach one takes in studying it. I took time to count the number of commentaries on Revelation I have in my library and found 82 different commentaries. Some are large, some small, some digital, and some hard copies. I studied the Book for a year in preaching school. I’ve studied it in other settings. The last time I studied it was as I taught a Bible Class in Dublin, GA a few years ago. During that study, I relied heavily upon a commentary written by a citizen of Marshall County, Lonnie Woodruff. Those who studied with me in GA, using this book, seemed to benefit a great deal from the study. I certainly enjoyed teaching it.

I asked for and received Lonnie’s permission to use his book once again in a study of Revelation on the radio. I asked him what caused him to be so interested in Revelation that he would write a 437-page book about it. He indicated that he was teaching the book in the early 1980’s and began to search for material. He never found what he thought “worked.” He determined to READ the book over and over again. He was convinced from his reading and study that chapters 21 and 22 of Revelation give a figurative description of THE CHURCH. He made the following statement to me by Email:

I was so convinced that those 2 chapters described the church that I put down the books and began studying the OT prophecies that foretold of the church. Before long it became obvious that 21 and 22 uses language of the prophets to tell us that we now have what was promised. Well, to make a long story short, I learned that if we keep the prophetic symbols constant, they would work to help interpret other parts of the book. The second part to the puzzle was understanding how Israel was a physical pattern of the church and how that physical pattern could be used to interpret several sections of Revelation that dealt with the spiritual church. The spiritual church followed the physical pattern of Israel. Now what we have is a method of interpreting Revelation. That is based on the Bible… Not a guess at what the symbols might mean. At that time, I really had no choice but to attempt to write it down and let others look at it and put it to the test.”

From my own personal experience with the book, I would encourage you to purchase the book: Revelation for Christians Today, by Lonnie Woodruff.
